The Similan Islands, approx 100km North of Phuket, comprise nine islands and were granted National Marine Park status in 1982. The whole area is picture postcard perfect, with snow white beaches set against huge granite outcrop backgrounds, all surounded by crystal clear waters …
The diving around the Similan area is diverse, with the West providing adrenaline charged drift dives; swim throughs and majestic granite underwater features, and the East offering a more sedate supremely rich coral garden scene, with over 500 species of hard and soft coral and huge amounts of marine life. The marine life here is as varied as the dive sites themselves, with quite literally everything you could possibly want on offer. The residents looking to make it into your prized photo collection include massive schools of Trevallies and Tuna; Leopard Sharks; Yellow Snapper; Oriental Sweetlips; Marble Rays; Batfish; Longnose Emperors; Guitar Sharks, Manta Rays and masses of various Macro Species. These residents are also often joined (at Richelieu Rock) by Whale Sharks in generous numbers, at this time of year, so an extra media card or ten may well be worth packing for this trip …

We have two sets of accommodation on this trip, as it features an extra couple of days “wind-down” after our busy liveaboard adventure. On arrival we will have access to local hotel facilities during the day, before boarding our liveaboard Mermaid II in the evening. Mermaid II is a 32m motor yacht, generally considered as one of the best in the region, features 8 air-conditioned sea-view cabins, shared en-suite and WC, large dinning area and lounge, shaded deck, sun deck and large dive platform. Meals on board are prepared freshly and are a mix of local and international cuisine. On return to shore after the liveaboard phase we have two more nights in paradise, at Club Bamboo, to wind down before our journey home …
