Sharks are one of the
most well recognised and emotive creatures of the sea, and they
rightly hold the title of apex predator, in their own natural
environment. It is unfortunate now, that Sharks are having to face a
far more brutal and efficient apex predator, in their environment,
that of man.
In
recent studies the most iconic species of sharks, such as
Hammerheads, Great Whites, Bull and Tiger Sharks are being
persecuted to such an extent, that they have now diminished to less
that 10% of their original number. In fact in certain regions
several resident shark species are now extinct. This decimation is a
result of many different actions, both indirect through
environmental pressures and population expansion and more direct
actions such as shark-finning, for the lucrative alternative
medicine trade. In all cases however this apex predator is almost
helpless, as at present there is very little worldwide legal
protection for sharks.
With these
facts in mind The Scuba + Outdoor Pursuits Centres, in Cannock,
Newcastle and Solihull have made the
Shark Trust,
the sole beneficiaries of their 2008 Air Campaign. The Shark Trust
are a UK based charity, established in 1997, working to advance the
worldwide conservation of sharks through science, education,
influence and action. They are active in many different ways, such
as their recent Gala Ball and Photo Competition, however the battle
is a long and costly one and additional funds are always necessary.
Previous Air
Campaigns held by the company have proved to be very successful.
Last year for example well over £2000 was raised in aid of the Air
ambulance and they are now attempting to tackle the ever growing
concerns surrounding the well being of a species very close to every
divers heart. The air campaign is different to Scuba + Outdoors
previous air campaigns, seeing a 50/50 split of all Air fills
monies* between The Scuba + Outdoor Pursuits Centre and the Shark
Trust. This change of approach will of course not be popular with
everyone; however with compressor maintenance fees increasing
continually year on year, it is a necessary one.
So now, with your
continued support and regular visits to the Scuba & Outdoor pursuits
Centres in Cannock, Newcastle & Solihull, we know we will be able to
do all we can to help the Shark Trust return the Shark to its
rightful apex position in the sea ! |
