PADI Self Reliant Diver Course – Its landed !

Yep its landed, the PADI Self Reliant Diver Course is here and boy oh boy does it look interesting (and definitely set to be a popular one). The PADI Self Reliant Diver Course is most likely the most contentious scuba course that PADI have ever released, with forum and dive site chatter set at maximum volume over it right now …

PADI Self Reliant Diver Course

So what is the PADI Self Reliant Diver Course, well that’s where it gets debatable and mainly over the interpretation of it (ie is it a Solo-Diving course) but here’s the official answer and more importantly the “what” it can do for you bits …

The PADI Self Reliant Diver Course has been developed independently by PADI Instructors, then adopted as a Distinctive Speciality by PADI, to focus on the need for divers to be more self sufficient for those occasions when a buddy may not be around. If you think about it, how many times have you turned around during a dive to simply look for your buddy and they are a good 10+ metres away with their face stuck in their camera viewfinder paying no attention to you or where you are ? … Yes and often, no doubt – well PADI Self Reliant Diver is for you !

It is not a course for everyone and certainly not one to be taken lightly so the pre-requisites have been set accordingly. To enroll on the programme you must:- a) be 18 years or over, b) be PADI Advanced OW or equivalent, c) have a minimum of 100 logged dives, and c) also pass a skills assessment prior to commencement …

Once you have met the prerequisites you will then complete a classroom based knowledge development and equipment workshop session, before then heading out to complete a series of three open water training dives. Within the programme you will develop your knowledge in areas including, but not limited to, dive planning, risk management and equipment considerations for self-reliant diving. Then within the in-water phases of your PADI self Reliant Diver Course at Stoney Cove you will practise and perfect your skills for appropriate out of gas drills, pony bottle deployment, buoyancy control and trim, and backup mask exchange mid-water …

As this is aimed at the already experienced diver it is taken as red that you will already be in possession of appropriate active-diver equipment, including Full Kit, Pony Bottle Set or Stage Cylinder, DSMB and Reel, Spare Mask, Line Cutter or Knife, Dive Computer and Audible Signaling Device …

Ok, so as you can see the PADI Self Reliant Diver Course is one hell of a course and as well as being a demanding one most certainly a very rewarding and informative one, and sure to help you in developing your own personal diving skills beyond their already high standards. !
