Shane & Marcos Qualify As PADI
Staff Instructors

T'wos the night before "they passed" and all through the pool not a
sound could be heard. Except for the - "Breaking wind of Nerves". Ok
ok it wasn't really that bad, but both Shane and Marcos were
certainly a little quieter than normal, during their final pool
evaluation on that last Sunday in April ...
After a full 4 day's of
beasting by Les Taylor, our resident PADI Course Director, the pair
had been fully (and without a doubt) taxed and tested to the
extreme. Their academic knowledge of all subjects diving related,
including the dreaded Physics, Physiology and ability to deliver
spotless presentations was now beyond question.
Over the IDC Staff
Program Shane and Marcos had attended hours of presentations
delivered by Les, ensuring that they were fully aware of their new
responsibilities and roles within the PADI Training System; they had
also delivered many presentations back to Les, demonstrating how
good their new and improved skills really were; and of course now in
their final session they just had to show us all how 'fish-like'
they could really be ...
Ok, but credit were
credit's due, after just over an hour in water, our 2 newest IDC
Staff Instructors emerged smiling from the water ... So
'Congratulations' Shane and Marcos, you are now up there with the
best of em !!! |

Stand To Attention … It's RAF
Squadron 196 !
Ok … you motley bunch of “bleep” “bleep” “bleepers”,
stand to attention … No its alright we’re only joking,
although
Fireman Phil used to be Fire Station Officer at Walsall, he did
reign his technique in (just a little).
So why all the military
references, well because we have just completed the first of our new
dedicated “Platinum Group” sessions. These new dedicated
sessions are specifically designed to meet the needs of social /
community and sporting groups, that are looking for a new interest
or “break from the norm !”.
The lucky guinea-pigs on
this occasion were the cadets of RAF Squadron # 196, and their
squadron leader, Brian. Although the 8 cadets were initially
scheduled to be completing their course at our Manor Farm venue in
Rushall, they eventually ended up doing a bit of jumping around
pretty much all the venues.
With Instructor Fireman
Phil at the helm the 6 week PADI Open Water Diver Programme flew by,
with the students being introduced to and perfecting all of their
required academic knowledge and in-water skills. Once all able to
Fin Pivot; Clear their Masks; Recover their Regulators and Don and
Doff their Equipment (to mention just a few skills) they were off to
Stoney Cove, to complete their four Open Water qualifying dives.
The role call sounded
that efficient (god knows why no-one in the RAF doesn’t have a first
name), even our own Divemasters stood to attention – “Beckett,
Beckett, Dunn, Carter, Spilsburry, Norris, and Green” … Once all
checked in and dry-suited up, it was on with the weekend of
exploration and discovery ! |

Warm Water
Rush 2006 - Hurghada - Red Sea

It was January,
it's was cold and that can only mean one thing ... Its time for the
January Warm Water Rush 2006 and a visit to "Hurghada in the Red
Sea".
The
week started with a dramatic journey to the airport, only just
reaching the gate before closing. It was a week of some fantastic
diving, concluded with an interesting last night when Mark & one of
the Regal reps put on their belly dancing costumes ! .......

Mmmm... Toasty
Warm

Although we were one of the first, and still one of the only, to
offer all of our recreational scuba courses in full drysuits, we had
somewhat skimped on the first couple of batches of thermal gear. Ok,
ok ... We've picked up on the (less than) subtle hints, we have now
replaced all of the Scuba + Outdoor Pursuits Undersuits with nice
new 100g Thinsulates.
As every inland diver knows the whole enjoyment and comfort of the
day is dependant on being able to keep warm, and stay dry. So
whereas the dry-suits did their job, our traditional 'wooly-bears'
lacked a little on the warmth front (especially in the winter).
The training team, as always, did their bit for the students and
persuaded us to invest in new undersuits. This was not a small
thing, especially when you consider that that equates to 24 new
undersuits to match the 24 drysuits, but they did indeed win their
desires.
So whilst Mark was left sobbing into his empty wallet, after buying
the new undersuits, the first batch of Open Water Students for 2006
went off to do their dives with the new undersuits. It wasn't long
before it was very obvious that the investment had worked, even Dawn
commented on how warm she was .... result there then ! |
