Stop right there !
Oh yes if you are in any doubt whether you want to be part of
the greatest marine spectacle on earth, then maybe one of our
other WWR trips is more suited to you. If however the prospect
of becoming embroiled in the midst of a once in a life time,
turbid blue soup of Sardines; Tuna; Shark; Seals; Whales and
Dolphins gets your pulse racing then here it is - Our WWR 2009
Wild Card ...
The Sardine Run,
and its incumbent ‘bait balls’ of Sardines has become one of
the most recognized marine based images ever, especially on
the various Nat Geo type documentary shows. With these vivid
images now accessible to all, it is of course only natural
that a select few would want nothing more than to dive in and
see it for themselves ...
The spectacle
begins annually, in June and July, with the millions of
Sardines that begin their cold journey from the Agulhas Banks,
heading North, up the East coast of South Africa. They are
driven to follow this route, as they follow the cold plankton
rich South to North current that develops there at this time.
The Sardines, of course, are only one element in what has
become known as “The Greatest Shoal on Earth”, because as they
head North following their food source, all manner of larger
marine inhabitants are also heading North following theirs -
the Sardines ...
These following
hunters will include all manner of predatory species, such as
Game Fish; Shark; Dolphin; Orca and even large flocks of Sea
Birds. It is thought that up to 20,000 Common Dolphin
congregate for the event, alongside large numbers of
Bottlenose; Orca and Brydes Whales. Also joining the
burgeoning throng are 1000’s of Copper Sharks, that make the
journey up from the Namibian Coast; Blacktip and Zambezi
Sharks ...
If the shoal
wasn’t already large enough its numbers are swelled yet
further with the addition of hundreds of Seals, and 10’000 or
more sea birds such as Gannets and Storm Petrels, joining from
the coast. The sea birds are able to take advantage of the
bumper harvest only thanks to the efforts of the Dolphins and
Sharks below, as they drive the Sardines up towards the
surface ...
Although not
actually feeding on the Sardines this phenomenal marine
spectacle is made even more special by the potential to see
Humpback and Southern Right Whales. These magnificent
creatures make their annual migration from their summer
feeding grounds in the Antarctic, to their mating grounds off
the Eastern coast of Africa, following the same route as the
‘super shoal’ ...
This 10 day trip
begins as we touch down in Durben, after our flight change in
Johannesburg, and transfer down to The Myboti River Lodge. The
Adventure commences the next morning, and for the next 8 days,
with a hearty breakfast before heading out to find our prey.
All divers will be invited to join the Microlight Spotter, in
locating the shoal and directing the divers to it, at some
point in the expedition ...
The diving during
this WWR Trip takes place during the morning, with the shoal
being observed by a mix of Scuba / Snorkelling, dependant on
the sea conditions and location of the shoal. On return to the
centre, after a light lunch onboard, your day takes a
different direction as you are invited to participate in the
wide range of afternoon activities. These activities are
included in your package, and include Horse Riding; Trail
Hikes; Micro Light Tour or just a few relaxing
Sundown-Cocktails at the lodge. As the day draws to a close
your Myboti Lodge hosts will prepare your three course dinner,
and talk you through the following days plan ...
Once you’ve
experienced all of the thrills and excitement of your week
amongst the shoal, we have got just what you need. No, not a
relaxing break at a top quality spa, this is something even
better ...
We have a simply
mind blowing WWR Extension Option for this trip, giving you
the chance to dive with The Greatest Predator on Earth ! Yes
our extension option on this trip gives you the chance to
extend your trip, by adding a four night stop over in Cape
Town. During your stay you will be offered the chance to come
face to face with the Great White Shark, not once but twice,
on two Great White cage dives; complete a great South African
Wreck Dive; visit the False Bay Seal Colony and then finally
relax with a Cape Town peninsula tour ... So all that really
remains to be said is - What are you waiting for
