Once
again its that time of the month, no not “that” time, I’m talking
about the “Doing It” club dive time. This time its inland, well it's
October and
winter is approaching fast. There’s no point making the coastal
trek, just to get blown out, and have to spend the day in the pub
(well ????, no we’ll go for a dive instead).
This month it’s
something more than just a little different, and wow has it proved
popular, with the places filling up that quickly Maya couldn’t write
quick enough to get the names on the list. It’s called “The Rez” and
in simple terms it’s a big boys (or should I say big ‘buoys’ – He He
He) underwater playground.
As the collective
gang gathered, a little excited but a little apprehensive, the
chatter gathered momentum, as our allotted dive time grew closer.
The dive time for this day was somewhat more exact than normal, as
The Rez closely control the number of divers underwater at any one
time. This of course is critical when you consider that the internal
size of the dive chamber is only 40m x 20m, and is in a state of
complete and permanent darkness.
The site itself
was really very nice, the café (which of course was nearly drank dry
of Tea and Coffee before during and after our dives) was staffed by
some of the most friendly dive café type people ever. The general
surroundings of the park made it a very civilized and attractive day
out, well until we arrived anyway.
The Rez itself, we
discovered, is a flooded reservoir dating back to the mid 1800’s
(now there’s one you don’t get to put in your log book every day of
the week), and is 40m x 20m site, fully enclosed and is in a state
of permanent darkness. It’s not very deep, in fact I think the
maximum depth any of the guys clocked was only 1.9m, however the
complete lack of spatial awareness and necessity to navigate around
the supporting structures made it a great adventure.
As there was no
fish life, or in fact any life (ok we did bump into a “Hyatt” fish
more than once or twice) the whole session was devoted to trying to
find you way back to where we got in. Ok it wasn’t that bad because
at least when we got lost we could stand up, well the taller ones
among us could, sorry shortys.
All in all
another great day out, and this time we were finished before lunch,
so I think we all made it home to either eat or cook the Sunday
lunch. |
